This experiment was carried out in the crop year of 2015-16 as a split plot design based on randomized complete blocks with three replications at the Agricultural Research Station, Ferdowsi University of Mashhad. Treatments were included three irrigation levels (50, 75 and 100% water requirement) as the main plot and two mulch surface (presence and absence of mulch) as subplot. The results showed that the use of plastic mulch for non-stress irrigation (irrigation 100% water requirement) increased the number of seeds per plant (5.7%) and the relative water content of leaves (12.8%) and had no significant effect on other traits. However, under mild stress conditions (irrigation 75% of water requirement) increased all studied traits except relative growth rate and had the greatest effect on grain yield (97.3%). Also, under conditions of severe stress (irrigation 50% of water requirement), the use of plastic mulch had the greatest effect on grain yield (312%) and had no significant effect on crop growth rate and relative growth rate. In general, the results showed that maintaining soil moisture and irrigation based on water needs of the plant can play an important role in increasing the growth and yield of pumpkin. It was also observed that irrigation at 75% of the plant water requirement and the use of plastic mulch produced the highest yield, light consumption efficiency, growth indices and oil content. Therefore, the use of plastic mulch is an effective way to reduce the amount of water consumed by the plant in conditions of dehydration.
